Taste of the Cape Fear

Seafood Chowder, Shrimp & Grits, and More

‘A Taste of Cape Fear’ at the 8 th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show will more than double your eating pleasure at this year’s show. In addition to featuring an award winning seafood chowder, house-made by one of the premiere seafood restaurants in Southport’s iconic Yacht Basin, Chef Craig Blanks of the Frying Pan Restaurant will delight you with his new, lip-smacking, mouth-watering, Southern-style Shrimp & Grits.

Winner of the first-ever SWBS Chowder Cook-off in 2012, Chef Craig makes a fresh batch of his secret recipe seafood chowder every day to the delight of his diners.

It’s their number one selling appetizer. He takes pride in this classic seaport fare: “I do a lot of prep work for the chowder. We use only fresh ingredients and heavy cream that creates a delicious, thick base for our corn, shrimp, potatoes, etc., and reveals the aroma and taste of a spicy, sweet, ocean breeze.”

This past year Chef Craig created and added to his Frying Pan Restaurant menu a delicious new entrée of Southern-style Shrimp & Grits, with the shrimp offered three different ways. A special recipe of grits which includes hefty portions of cream, butter, and cheese lays the foundation for his Andouille gravy, to which a generous portion of shrimp, cooked your way (fried, blackened or grilled), is added.

In addition to the wonderful chowder, Chef Craig has gone over the top in his support of the SWBS by also offering bowls of this wonderful concoction at this year’s Taste of Cape Fear event. Chef Craig has very generously offered to cook and donate these two very special dishes, seafood chowder and Southern-style Shrimp & Grits, for the delight of the Boat Show crowd, for which the SWBS is most appreciative.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 am and the Taste of Cape Fear event tent will open for serving from 11 am – 2 pm or until the supply runs out. The cost for a bowl of either of these delightful offerings will again be only $5.00 and will be served with oyster crackers. Napkins and spoons will be provided.

As an extra special treat, our early morning coffee provider, Side Street Bakery, will offer desserts. Water will also be available. A limited number of seating spaces will be available under the food tent as well.
